Rules of the game
The cash game Texas Hold ‘Em poker is known for its distinctive rules. There are, in total, 4 betting rounds. This makes this game a lot more strategic than some of the counterparts. At the beginning of each round, two hidden hole cards are dealt to players on the table. The players need to make a decision here as to whether to continue playing or quit the round. All of them need to decide whether they will put the money to advance to the next round. This decision is made based on the quality of the hole cards that the player has and how many players are left. Also, how much money the player has left is a very important factor. This is called the pre-flop stage.
Then there’s the flop stage. The dealer burns one card off the deck and deals three cards, face-up, on the table. These are the community cards and the players can make winning combinations by using them with their hole cards. By now the players can begin to realistically assess the odds of them having the best cards on the table. So, they decide whether to check, bet, or fold. If there are at least two players that have checked or bet, then the game advances to the next round. The dealer burns one card off the deck and deals the fourth community card on the table. This is known as the turn or fourth street.
Again, the players make assessments whether to check, bet, or fold. Finally, the fifth round comes at the river (or fifth street) the fifth and final card on the table. The final fourth betting round is up. If the players go for it, then they will need to show their cards and see who wins.
Psychology and strategy
One of the first players of the game of Texas Hold ‘Em, and one of the founders of WSOP, Crandell Addington, has said: “They didn’t call it Texas hold ’em at the time, they just called it hold ’em.… I thought then that if it were to catch on, it would become the game. Draw poker, you bet only twice; hold ’em, you bet four times. That meant you could play strategically. This was more of a thinking man’s game.”
The fact that there are four betting rounds in the game makes it a lot more strategic. It gives players the ability to wage the battle during multiple rounds. Every round of betting has its intricacies. You will need to develop skills in order to milk every round for what it’s worth.
There is the element of luck in Texas Hold ‘Em, there is no doubt about it. It’s up for debate how important this element is. But there is no doubt that there is a heavy influence of the element of skill as well. The ability to read other people while playing Texas Hold ‘Em is paramount if you wish to make money. Sure, every now and then a complete rookie with blind luck alone will win games and tournaments. But in the long run, if you wish to excel in Texas Hold ‘Em, you will need to practice.

Math is also a very important element in this game. You will need to be able to calculate estimates of the odds of you having the winning hand. Also, you will need to calculate the estimated odds of a certain card coming in the next betting round. If you know your math, then this will make it a lot easier for you to make sound decisions.
Online Texas Hold ‘Em
What really made Texas Hold ‘Em poker blow up in public consciousness was the advent of the internet. Nowadays anyone with access to the internet can begin playing this game. The sole caveat is that playing online poker has to be legal in the person’s country.
Back in 2011, the US Department of Justice seized the domain names of PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker. The funds that players had on these platforms were frozen. Since then it’s illegal to play online poker in most countries in the US.
But this doesn’t mean that there are few players that play online Texas Hold ‘Em. On the contrary – the online variant of this game exploded all around the world. You can find thousands of players at any given moment on some of the more popular gambling platforms.
The game is very easy to pick up and play. Even though it’s very deep and complex, even the most casual player can pick it up and have fun. The game is also potentially highly lucrative. Back in 2003, Chris Moneymaker entered WSOP through an online satellite tournament. He won WSOP and made millions of dollars for it. And this is one of the main reasons as to why players from all around the world start playing this game.
